Topic:

Data deep dive

A hand-written shopping list on your desk is data. 3-Gigabytes of electronic information is data. Using the first, you can go to the store and recall what you wanted to buy. With the second you can open a wealth of historical evidence and information utilizing Telematic A.I., parametric and other resources that easily supersede the old-school methods of evaluating events or historical activities.

Speaker

Christine Walker, Fowler White Burnett
Marcel Herrera, Compare Yacht Insurance

9:15am – 10:10am

Topic:

Techno Captain

Our panel will discuss the past, current and future technology we are finding onboard vessels of all types and sizes. It is fascinating, complex and sophisticated, but requires a whole new understanding of the risks and insurability. Will technology enhance safety on the water, or will it cause a decline in the basic skills of seamanship and navigation? Can a vessel owner/operator meet the standard of seaworthiness if he/she does not have a clue how all the gadgets work?

Speakers

Drew Orvieto, Siemens
Dan Rutherford, One 80 Intermediaries
Matthew Knoll, Knoll Marine Surveys

10:10am – 10:30am Morning Break
10:30am – 11:00am Keynote Address: What was once transportation has evolved to be entertainment
A look at the history of the SS UNITED STATES, the grandest of all ocean liners, her peers and the evolution of how liners as transportation have today become floating platforms of entertainment with thousands of passengers and crew on a single vessel. We know and appreciate how the RMS TITANIC incident changed the rules but are the contemporary risks equal or greater than before?
Speaker

Charles Anderson, Society of Maritime Arbitrators, New York

11:00am – 11:55am Topic:

Paper Crew / Paper Owners

Like many industries worldwide, the business of owning and operating yachts and ships has also been impacted by the diminishing pool of skills and knowledge. We may not agree but any landlubber can purchase a 50-foot boat and be on the water tomorrow without any training or knowledge. Let’s look at the other side of the fence and identify how we should qualify not only the vessel operators but the owners of larger vessels too. Do they have what it takes to do their respective roles correctly?

Speakers

John Dial, At the helm training.
Otis Felder, Wilson Elser
Mike Reardon, Reardon Yacht Consulting

11:55am – 12:00pm Announcements
12:00pm - 1:30pm Lunch Buffet
1:30pm - 2:30pm Topic: It didn’t happen at sea
Shoreside facilities come in many types and sizes from the small Mom & Pop 12-boat marinas to container terminals or shipyards covering thousands of acres. Each offers different risks, but they are risks just the same. Our panel cannot teach you how to deal with these risks but will identify how they look at and manage the problems that arise in various types of marine facilities.
Speakers

Colin Fraser, Starr Marine
Dan Kelly, Holbrook & Murphy
Glenn Wiltshire, Broward County Port Everglades Department

2:30pm - 3:30pm Topic: Knowledge flows both ways

Training a new factory worker is easy. Stand beside an experienced worker and learn how to fit Part-A into Part-B. Can the same concept be applied in the marine insurance and admiralty arenas with remote meetings and internet chat messages? Can we do “quality work” in the world of ZOOM? Many people believe the answer is no, some say yes. Is there a substitute for the traditional one-on-one to teach and pass on knowledge, social skills and the necessary finesse associated with claims and litigation. Listen to our speakers and decide if the long-distance connection can produce the same results as “in-person.”

  Speakers

Krista Fowler Acuna, Hamilton Miller & Birthisel
TBN

3:30pm - 4:00pm Afternoon Break
4:00pm - 5:00pm Topic: And now for the rest of the story

You should not miss, and you might not believe this story. A convoluted tale that revolves around two murders and a scuttled yacht. It begins with a young man found a drift in a life raft near Martha’s Vinyard and culminates with a criminal indictment. Our panelists have first-hand knowledge about the physical investigation and the subsequent legal activities surrounding this real story that was prominent in the news.

  Speakers

David Farrell, Farrell Smith O’Connell
Jonathan Klopman, Klopman Marine Surveys
